Upsell And Cross Sell

Shopify is an excellent platform for eCommerce, and you can improve it in a thousand ways when you use apps to enhance your store's functionality. Shopify apps add many features absent from the base platform or expand existing features to make them more powerful and valuable.

One such feature is upselling. Upselling is a time-honored marketing strategy for improving the profits and revenue of a store, and it's well worth using for anyone who can leverage it.

Of course, Shopify has plenty of apps to facilitate upselling, but what are they, and what's the best Shopify upsell app?

Read on to find out!

30 Second Summary

You can improve your Shopify store's profits by using upsell apps to get customers to buy upgraded versions of products. When you upsell, you show buyers how a better model gives them more value. You can also cross-sell by suggesting related items that go well together, like phone cases with phones. ReConvert stands out as your best option - you'll get one-click upsells, thank you page customization and smart product suggestions. You can try it free for your first 49 sales, then pay just $8 monthly plus a small fee on successful upsells.

What is Upselling and How Does it Work?

Before getting into a specific list of the best Shopify apps, it's worth looking at the actual process of upselling and how it works. Once you know how it works, you can see the value in an app that helps you upsell and facilitates the process.

Upselling is one of two linked techniques in eCommerce, the other being cross-selling.

Upsell And Crosssell Comparison

They are often confused with one another (I have probably even misused the terms at some point), so it's worth pinning it down.

  • Upselling is convincing users to upgrade the version of whatever they're buying into a more expensive (or just more lucrative for you) product version.
  • Cross-selling convinces users to buy additional products that complement what they're already planning to buy.

You can think about cell phones as a perfect example.

Imagine that you've been doing your research and are interested in the latest iPhone (the iPhone 14 as of this writing, to date the post.) You're doing your research and think the regular edition iPhone 14 is a good deal.

During the purchase process, an upsell would be all of the messaging and comparisons that show you how the iPhone 14 Pro is a better deal. You get more power, smoother motion, and a better camera! It has a better battery and a more powerful CPU! That is only an additional $100 over the base price of the regular iPhone 14! That sounds like a great deal. Right?

Iphone Pricing Upsell

A successful upsell would convince you that the value of the 14 Pro is enough over the regular 14 that it makes sense to spend the additional money to get it.

Of course, it's not always more expensive. Sometimes, an upsell version might only be a few dollars more because the more powerful version is on sale. Or consider a fast-food meal; you can buy a burger, fries, and a drink for X, or get a larger fry and drink with a combo meal for the same price. What value! (The company, of course, makes the same profit either way or even slightly more from the larger meal.)

A cross-sell is complementary, not a replacement. You see it in the checkout process all the time. For the iPhone example, when you check out, Apple might try to sell you an AirTag, a MagSafe, AirPods, a Lightning Cable, or any of their other accessories. If you're buying a new phone, why not add a few useful additions to enhance your experience?

Upsell Example On Apple

Or, for the fast-food example, you buy a burger and fries; the upsell could be the drink, make it a combo, and even save you money!

You can immediately see the potential value in these two processes. They're both ubiquitous, so much so that you rarely see a checkout process or a thank you page that doesn't have some upsell funnel to push one, the other, or both.

By default, you cannot upsell during the conversion process after the user has already made their primary selection on Shopify. That's why there are so many apps offering that functionality.

So, which apps are available, and which one is the best?

1: My Pick: ReConvert Upsell & Cross Sell

Unusually for me, I'm putting my pick at the top.

ReConvert is my favorite, and it's not just me; it has an immaculate 5-star review with over 3,300 reviews on Shopify. When you add it to Shopify, it indexes your products and allows you to generate upsell offers in a single click. In seconds, you can build upsell and cross-sell bundles of products and design landing pages with a visual editor. On top of that, you can add customized offers with information about your customers, including birthday offers.

Reconvert Pricing Page

Here are some of the features their app has:

  • One-click upsells to boost AOV (average order value).
  • Thank You page upsells.
  • Test new upsell funnels on your checkout or thank you pages.
  • Display related products, similar to Amazon's "You may also like" feature.
  • Collect customer feedback on successful upsells to train their algorithm.
  • Add a "Re-order" add-to-cart button to increase revenue and encourage quick sales.
  • Showcase "trending products.
  • Sort products into collections to train their system.
  • Create and edit "Thank you" pages with a drag-and-drop page builder, with your brand and layout colors automatically applied.
  • Use pre-made templates to assemble pages easier.
  • Track your analytics and ROI in the dashboard.
  • Offer coupons with FOMO widgets, including timers, limited-time offers, birthday offers, and more.

ReConvert's customer support is, in my opinion, better than all of the other options on this list. They have 24/7 live chat support, and you can speak with technical support in minutes.

You can also give ReConvert a try before you buy. They have a free version that works for the first 49 sales on your online store per month.

After that, pricing is pretty reasonable, starting at $8 per month plus a tiny sub-1% cut of extra revenue generated by their upsells. If there is no upsell, there is no additional charge.

Of course, I understand if you don't want to go with the first option, so here are some other options you might consider. You'll like ReConvert, though, so give it a try.

2: Candyrack

In contrast to ReConvert, Candyrack only has a hundred or so reviews, but all of them are positive.

They focus on site speed (with a dedicated CDN and asynchronously-loading scripts) and design.

They work to make your upsell items eye-catching and pleasant to browse, which makes it easier to convince users that they want to buy. They also leverage the one-click upsell configuration process, using machine learning to sort products into product bundle upsells as well as cross-sell bundles.

Candyrack

They have a 14-day free trial, after which their basic plan starts at $30 per month. This pricing may seem steep, but they don't take that revenue cut that ReConvert and other apps do, so it's a predictable, flat fee at all times, great for scaling. If you don't sell higher-priced products or have a large average order value, the flat fee may work better for you than a percentage-based fee.

3: Vitals

Vitals is one of those apps you go to if you want a little bit of everything. It doesn't necessarily excel at any feature like a single "focused" app might. Still, it bundles up dozens of different elements into one app, so you don't have to manage many different apps, conflicts, updates, and troubleshooting with various devs.

Upsell Feature On Vitals

What does Vitals do?

  • Importing and collecting product reviews.
  • Upsell, cross-sell offers and offer management.
  • FOMO options like stock limits and timed discounts.
  • Live visitor session recording for analytics.
  • Email marketing and upsell pop-ups, bar displays, countdown timers, and other formats.
  • Social proof and SEO features.

These features are just a selection; each one is more of a category with a bunch of sub-features in it, and they offer even more than that. For example, they support pre-orders, automatic currency conversion rates, Instagram add-ons, abandoned cart reductions, post-purchase upsells, discounted upsells, and more.

It is available for a simple $30 per month, with no traffic limits or high-tier plans; one package for everyone.

Vitals can do a lot; you'd have to use ten other apps to get close to its functionality.

However, if you are already using apps that accomplish these things, it may not be the best fit for you.

4: Frequently Bought Together

On Amazon, when browsing a product, you'll see a little box near the bottom that says something like "Customers frequently buy these items together" or just Frequently Bought Together. That box recommends cross-selling items based on customer data from users buying items as bundles. Amazon has had some notorious problems with this, but recommending related products is still an effective cross-sell system.

"Frequently Bought Together" is an app designed to mimic that Amazon functionality on your Shopify store.

Moreover, it's all automatic; they have a central machine learning algorithm that learns how products are related and generates bundles automatically, with no need for you to set it up yourself. You can also add offers on top, like free shipping or multi-item/bundle discounts.

They also support new businesses by offering a free plan for stores that business owners recently created, and their paid plans start at a flat $10 per month.

5: Upsell Bundles

This simple app takes the bundled product concept and does away with all the fancy algorithmic nonsense and machine-learning buzzwords. Instead, they give you complete control over creating those bundles yourself.

Booster Apps Bundle And Save

Honestly, I'm always a little skeptical about handing control over to an AI, so an app that lets you do it all the way you want is pretty beneficial as an option.

This app has a free version with a bit of a gimmick attached. It's free if your store hasn't made any sales in the past 30 days.

Then, it charges you once the app gets you a sale. From there, the pricing depends on your Shopify plan and is either $20, $30, or $45 per month, depending on tier. The only downside is that I've seen a few reports that say it isn't very customizable or compatible with specific themes and product placements, so give it a look before you rely on it. Thankfully, they have a seven-day trial, so you can give it a spin before you commit to it.

6: Bold Upsell

In business for a decade, Bold is a pretty robust upsell and cross-sell app with a decent amount of analytics power. You have to use a secondary app (Bold Brain) to get the analytics, but it gives you a ton of data you can use to customize bundle packs and upsell offers. Bold also makes many other useful apps if you want to add coupons, product variations, or other analytics to the mix.

Product Upsell And Crossells

One of the downsides is the pricing. It starts at $10 per month, which seems reasonable, but it limits you to 200 views of your upsells, not even sales. They also charge more (a whopping $99 per month) for funnel management.

Sometimes, that can be a hard sell.

7: Voyager Upsell & Cross-Sell

Voyager is a combination of an upsell app, an analytics app, and a gamification app. The analytics track everything they can about a user, including shopping cart items, the device for browsing, and historical behavior, and uses it to create and show upsell offers to them.

Voyager Upsells App

They also include some gamification options to make shopping fun with your store while minimizing any potential cross-device issues.

I'm not sure it's as exciting as they make it out to be, but it might be worth checking out for a flat $27 per month. When you consider that some of the other options on this list charge a percentage-based fee or a per-sale fee, the flat price is a welcome change.

8: Wiser

Wiser is a combination of an upsell engine and a product recommendation app. Remember how I mentioned Amazon's little box with products people bundle? This app works the same way for all the other recommended products.

Wiser Frequently Bought Together App

They looked at everything Amazon does and replicated as many upsell, cross-sell, and just plain sell features as possible. It's robust, customizable, and has a free version so that you can try it. Take a look!

9: In Cart Upsell

Many upsell apps only work on the product page, which can divert attention away from the products people want and can make your conversion process less focused. If someone is still looking and deciding, giving them a distraction can turn them away.

In Cart Upsell App

On the other hand, if a user is already going through the checkout process and is committed to buying, giving them an impulse upsell can be an effective way to boost sales and squeeze more performance out of your eCommerce store.

This app has a free version, but it's limited to a single upsell and has a watermark, so it's probably better to spring for the $20 plan at first.

10: Unlimited Smart Upsell Offers

You may have noticed that many upsell apps limit how many upsells they process each month without making you pay for more expensive plans that may not be worth it.

Unlimited Smart Upsell App

This app directly addresses that problem by giving you all of its features up front and unlimited. Pricing is entirely dependent on your Shopify plan and starts at $20. Easy peasy.

Professional Medium

$30/mo

Advanced Large 1

$42/mo

My Recommendation

Out of all these options, I feel ReConvert has the best balance of features, customization, and choice for store owners. It's powerful, but it doesn't get in your way with overdone AI recommendations or management and still gives you a ton of flexibility. At the same time, it's still a focused app, rather than something like Vitals that tries to do everything. Taking a small percentage-based fee from each upsell is a tough pill to swallow, but it's such a powerful app that it's a drop in the bucket compared to what it earns its users.

They boast an average return on investment of over 2,000% for their customers.

Do you like ReConvert? Do you have a different preference, including something I haven't put on the list? Feel free to let me know in the comments, and I'll look at your options.
